Online sports betting in Kentucky starts Thursday: What to know

(Louisville).- Some Louisville sports fans have been placing sports bets online for years now, but to do so, would have had to drive across the Ohio River and park in Indiana – where sports wagering has been legal since 2019.

Online sports betting in Kentucky starts Thursday: What to know

Starting Thursday, those trips will be over, with online sports wagering now legal in Kentucky.

A few things to know:

  • Online sports wagers can be placed at 6 a.m. Thursday.

  • You must be 18 or older to wager on sports in Kentucky.
  • Kentucky bettors must use one of the state-approved sports books, which include Barstool, Bet 365, Bet MGM, Caesars, Draftkings, Fanatics, and Fanduel.
  • Caesars and Fanduel require account holders to be 21 or older.

The landmark comes three weeks after the state launched sports betting at brick-and-mortar locations. In the first two weeks, $4.5 million was wagered, according to an announcement from Gov. Andy Beshear.

At the same time, more than 60,000 users had registered accounts with mobile platforms, Beshear said.

"We've seen numbers in other states, and we're looking 80 to 90 percent of tax revenues or gross revenues in mobile platform wagering," said Rep. Al Gentry, D-Louisville, who co-sponsored the bill to legalize sports gaming. "So yeah, we're not even touching what we're about ready to see."

Jeff Nefouse is a sports fan who drove to Indiana to place bets. For him, being able to bet without making that driver puts him on par with friends who live out of state. "I've got friends who live out of state from college, and they'll be like, 'Hey, who wants to get in on the over tonight?' and it's stuff like that I can do now," he said.
